Dear Sammy,
Today you are officially five months old. … In America that is. If you were born in China you would be seen as over a year old already! (I'm officially 744 months old, American as of last Saturday.) Great Grandma Earls liked her birthday almost as much as Christmas, because, she said "A birthday makes you feel Special." And she'd wrap her arms around herself for a great big hug, and her eyes would sparkle and get really big, which was cute because she was a very tiny person.
Some people like big parties, others like to do something special with just one or two friends. For your first couple of birthdays, your mom and dad will make the plans, but then you'll get to decide which may challenge your parents to be very creative and pray a lot. Your mom asked for a cook-out when she was 3, which was a big deal because, as you know, her birthday is in March and it could have snowed that day! One year she asked for pony rides, then roller skating … you get the idea.
Presents are important for some people, but for some, not so much. When Uncle Justin was five he opened a couple of presents and said "Give the rest to (Uncle) Eric." (Who as you know is his little brother.) I use to want lots of presents, but now I'm happy with one or two.
Do you know what I got for my birthday this year? Fun! Pops and I went out with some friends to listen to music we liked when we were sixteen, and laughed and laughed and laughed. The next day Aunt Jen had a pumpkin carving party and now her friends are mine.
"Make new friends and keep the old…" is a song you will learn when you get a little older. That really is what birthdays are about, I think, Sammy. Every year you will meet people who will help you discover the person God wants you to be. Some you will only know for a little while. Others, like family, will be around forever. You will know who those people are because on your birthday they will say "Happy Birthday" and you will be glad, even if they don't give you a present.
Love,
Marmee

Happy 5 month birthday little Sammy! I LOVE birthdays, too. Someday Grammy will explain to you why I didn't get to celebrate my first birthday until I was 30 years old, but now your grammy is one of my very best friends, one of those "GOLD" friends she talked about, and she is one that I will NEVER forget for as long as I live.
Hope you have LOTS of wonderful birthdays, Sammy, with your family and friends around you to celebrate.
Lorie
You are so sweet, my dear, dear friend!
